La Riqueza by Pete Johnson

Posted: Tuesday, April 15, 2008

By David Savona

Tatuaje brand owner Pete Johnson and star cigarmaker Jose "Pepin" Garcia have created a brand called La Riqueza.

The cigars, which should be available in June, will be made with Connecticut-broadleaf wrappers, a first for both men.

"I've been wanting to do broadleaf since I started Tatuaje," said Johnson. "We were lucky to acquire it from Oliva Tobacco. It has been sitting in their warehouse for a while."

Johnson said the wrappers on La Riqueza were "dark and juicy," but the blend was somewhat more tempered than his other smokes. The cigars, which have Nicaraguan fillers and binders, are being made by Garcia in his Tabacalera Cubana S.A. factory in Nicaragua. They will come in five sizes and will cost $7.50 to $10.
